Hi Parents,
Please check below to see what is happening this week.
Maths - we are revising work already done and the children will be doing a maths test. You will see this in the portfolios at the end of this term.
English - we are continuing with our discussion on Special Occasions. The children will be writing a recount on a favourite Special Occasion. Please chat with them about this as it will help them remember the event and sequence their recount.
History - we are continuing with Logan unit. Ask the children what they know about Logan in the 'olden' days and please feel welcome to share anything you or grandparents may have from this time. We would welcome grandparents to talk to the children as well.
Hope you have a lovely week.
Regards,
Felicity & Melissa

Week 6
Wow, over half way through the term already! Where is the time going???
This week we are beginning our second English unit for the term - 'Special Occasions'.
The two genres we will be covering over the next four weeks are 'recount' and 'card's.
Talking with your child about special occasions your family has experienced will help them to recall these events which will also assist them in writing a recount of a special occasion.
In Maths we are revising all topics covered so far this term in preparation for a maths test next week. You can help your child by doing lots of counting from 0 - 200 with them. (Counting forwards, backwards, in 2s, 5s & 10s from any starting point, ie. 5, 7, 9, etc...)
This week we will also finish our Science unit 'Watch it Grow!' and begin our History unit on Logan.
A big thank you to our students and their families for the generous donations to Caritas. We have already raised $83.40!!!!
Hope you have a good week,
Felicity & Melissa

Week 5
Week 5 has begun with another wet Monday! This week we will be busy finishing the first of our literacy units - 'Junior Chef'. The children have a recipe and an alternate narrative ending to complete as the assessment pieces.
In maths we are continuing to explore numbers and patterns from 0-200. We will be counting forwards and backwards in 1s from various starting points and also counting in patterns of 10s and 5s. We will be collecting data and recording it using tally marks and pictograms.
Ask your child what they have observed about our mealworms since we first got them.
Have a good week and stay dry!

Week 4
Welcome to Week 4. Our Class Vision Statement is now finished and you are welcome to join us for the presentation of it in the church tomorrow (Tuesday 19th February) at 9 am.
In maths we are continuing with lots of number work. This includes counting (forwards, backwards) numbers up to 200 and place value. We want the children to have a very thorough understanding of hundreds, tens and ones and the relationship between them. We will also revise 3D shapes - cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones and spheres.
In literacy we are still focusing on recipes, paying particular attention to the format as well as the use of nouns and verbs in them. A reminder not to be concerned if your child has no trouble with their home reader. The aims of home reading are to practise the reading strategies learnt in class, develop fluency and expression and develop a love of reading for enjoyment. We want them to be sucessful and for the text to not be a struggle for them. This will help boost their confindence greatly. We give them more challenging texts in our small guided reading sessions in class.
Hope you have a great week.

In Maths we are continuing to focus on numbers 100 to 200. We are also revising 2D shapes and introducing rhombuses.
Enjoy your week!

Week 2
Welcome to Week 2 of Year 2! This week we are starting to get into the swing of things with our first full week.
Homework:
The children brought theirhomework folders home today. In them are their homework book (with the homeword grid glued in), this week's spelling word list and their reading log. Readers will come home for the first time on Tuesday. The 'Studyladder' login details have been glued to the inside cover of the homework book. You can find a link to it on the Homework page of the blog. The spelling words are also there in case the list gets misplaced. We have asked the children to keep the reading record, homework book, spelling list and reader in their homework folder so that all of their homework items remain together. This will help them learn responsibility for their belongings. We ask that the homework folder gets returned to school daily so the children can get a new book.
It is important children read regularly at home to support the reading and literacy activities we do in the classroom. Like with everything else, PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT! Even if your child is reading independently, please still listen to them read some pages aloud. It is important for them to still listen to you read aloud too so read a page or a paragraph of their book. Asking questions about what your child is reading will help them develop their comprehension skills as well.
In maths we are revising the 100s chart and beginning to explore 100 to 200. You can help your child by doing lots of counting - forwards, backwards, in 2s, 5s and 10s.
In english we are beginning our literacy unit on recipes.
Have you heard about our class pets? Can you guess what they are? Stay tuned!
Have a good week,
Felicity & Melissa
