Week 4

Hi and welcome to another week.

This morning the children attended a Water wise presentation from Logan City Council.  It was a very interactive experience and the children demonstrated how much they have learnt by being able to answer all the questions they were asked! All students will bring home a bookmark and a magnet and a lucky few are also taking home a water bottle they won as a prize.  They are becoming experts at saving water so hopefully you see savings on your water bills!

In maths we are continuing to work on the areas already covered so far this term and we are also exploring calendars and seasons. The children need to know the days of the week, months of the year, how many days in a month and what seasons fall in which months.

In English we are exploring 'alliteration' (when words start with the same sound, i.e. a piece of pie).  The Pamela Allen book we will be focusing on is 'Grandpa, Thomas and the Green Umbrella'.

A reminder to return Father's day forms and email a photo of the children with their dads to fpryer@bne.catholic.edu.au.

Hope you have a good week,
Felicity and Melissa

Week 3

Welcome to Week 3.  We already seem to be flying through this 11 week term!
A reminder homework is now due on Fridays and children should be reading nightly on top of their homework sheet.

Maths: we are continuing to revise money and word problems using addition and subtraction. We are also exploring adding groups of 10 to single-digit numbers, i.e. 4 + 10; 4 + 20; 4 + 30 etc.  We will also revise reading o'clock, half-past, quarter past and quarter to times.

English: This week our sound is r influenced 'er'. The children will be learning about 'onomatopoeias'. Ask the children if they can remember how to pronounce it! If they can't it's pronounced 'on-a-mat-a-pee-a'. This refers to the use of a word which imitates the sound it represents, i.e. hiss.

Religion: We will be starting to explore some of Jesus' parables in the New Testament of the Bible.

Science:  We will continue our investigation of water - where it comes from, it's importance as a resource and ways we can conserve it.

Have a great week!

Week 2

Welcome to another week. The children had a great week last week, we couldn't believe how much they seem to have grown up over the holidays.

This week in maths we are revising single-digit subtraction facts and looking at word problems that use single-digit subtractions to find the answer.

In English we are exploring the first Pamela Allen book of the unit: Shh, Little Mouse!  This week our spelling words have 'air' and 'are'.

We are continuing our science unit.  Look out for photos of our investigations into water!

Ask your children to tell you about God's Dream. (Part of our Religion unit)

A reminder that tomorrow (Tuesday 16th) is photo day.  A few children still have forms outstanding and they must be returned before they have their photo taken. The children need to come dressed in their full dress uniform (check shirt), and have the correct coloured socks and shoes. Girls should have long hair tied back and wear school coloured bobbles, ribbons etc.

Hope you all have a good week. Fingers crossed the forecasters have it wrong!

Week 1

Welcome to the beginning of Term 3! We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and we look forward to hearing the children's stories during the week.

The children will bring home new look homework from this week. Homework will consist of a WEEKLY homework sheet that will be sent home on a Monday and will be due on the Friday of the same week. We will continue to alternate between Homework books 1 & 2. Weekly spelling words will be on the homework sheet.

This week in maths we are revising single-digit additions and exploring word problems. The children will write word problems as number sentences. We are also beginning work on reading calendars.

In literacy, we will be looking at book reports, the themes of different books and favourite books and themes the children enjoy. This will introduce our English unit where we will be doing an Author study and the children will write their own book report.

There will be information about the units of work we will be covering in the Term Overview letter which will be sent home shortly.

Have a good week,
Felicity & Melissa

Week 10

It's hard to believe this is the last week of term and half a school year has gone by. The children had a great day at the athletics carnival and they all need to be congratulated on their positive attitudes throughout all events. It was lovely to see all their smiling faces all day. Thanks to the parents that supported and helped out.

On Tuesday we have another busy day. The children are doing a dance fever performance at 9.30 in the undercover shed and parents are invited to come along and watch. We are going on our excursion to Greenbank RSL at 10.30. The children will be given the opportunity to eat lunch lunch before we leave, they will be given a drink and chip snack there and then they will have afternoon tea at the usual time upon our return.

As a follow up to the excursion, the children will discuss what they saw and learnt and they will complete a worksheet. They will also plan and design their 'Soldier's suitcase'. We decided to postpone doing this activity until after their excursion as it will be more relevant after they have had the opportunity to see real artefacts and hear stories from returned soldiers. The children will complete their suitcases on Wednesday. This week we will also finish our science unit so their will be lots of mixing of different ingredients!

The children are looking forward to finishing up the term with the movie 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'. Don't forget we need the permission note signed as it is PG.

We hope you have a good week and an even better holiday. Fingers crossed we have more of these beautiful clear skies for the coming two weeks! Safe travels for any families driving or flying.

Week 9

Welcome to Week 9, sorry for the delay in the weekly update. It was lovely catching up with a lot parents at interviews yesterday and we look forward to seeing any more of you today.

The children were not telling you stories when they came home with only a spelling list and no homework grid yesterday! We decided with a short week this week and lots on in the coming fortnight, not to forget a busy term, that we would reduce homework for this week and not have any homework next week. We would still like the children to read for the next couple of nights but ask that all reading books are back on Friday so we can return them to the library.

This fortnight we will continue our focus on money in maths and also revisit areas the children need additional teaching and support with that have been covered during the term. The children are busy finishing their descriptions of an animal as part of our English unit and we will be having lots of fun exploring mixtures in our science unit over the remainder of the term.

A reminder that next Monday is the junior sports day, lets hope the weather cooperates!

Enjoy the remainder of your week,
Felicity & Melissa

Week 8

Welcome to Week 8! A big thanks for all your support at our assembly last week. We're sure you agree that all the children did a wonderful job, we are very proud! A reminder that this week we are hosting mass on Wednesday at 9am in the church. We would love to see as many of you there as possible.

We are continuing to finish some assessment items this week and also continue activities in our units of work. In english for the remainder of the term, we are having a strong focus on comprehension and punctuation skills.  In maths we are looking at the features of Australian coins and notes. We will also begin to count collections of money.  It would be great if the children have the opportunity to do this with real money at home as it's much more exciting than our pretend money at school!

A reminder to please book in for parent/teacher interviews this week if you haven't already done so.  We look forward to catching up with all of you.

Have a good week,
Felicity & Melissa
