Week 5

Week 5 has begun with another wet Monday!  This week we will be busy finishing the first of our literacy units - 'Junior Chef'. The children have a recipe and an alternate narrative ending to complete as the assessment pieces.
In maths we are continuing to explore numbers and patterns from 0-200. We will be counting forwards and backwards in 1s from various starting points and also counting in patterns of 10s and 5s. We will be collecting data and recording it using tally marks and pictograms.

Ask your child what they have observed about our mealworms since we first got them.

Have a good week and stay dry!

Week 4

Welcome to Week 4.  Our Class Vision Statement is now finished and you are welcome to join us for the presentation of it in the church tomorrow (Tuesday 19th February) at 9 am.

In maths we are continuing with lots of number work. This includes counting (forwards, backwards) numbers up to 200 and place value. We want the children to have a very thorough understanding of hundreds, tens and ones and the relationship between them. We will also revise 3D shapes - cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones and spheres.

In literacy we are still focusing on recipes, paying particular attention to the format as well as the use of nouns and verbs in them. A reminder not to be concerned if your child has no trouble with their home reader. The aims of home reading are to practise the reading strategies learnt in class, develop fluency and expression and develop a love of reading for enjoyment.  We want them to be sucessful and for the text to not be a struggle for them.  This will help boost their confindence greatly.  We give them more challenging texts in our small guided reading sessions in class.

Hope you have a great week.

Week 3

The children are settling in well to the routines of the classroom. This week we are busy creating our Class Vision Statement and this forms part of our Religion unit for the term. The children have written Lenten Promises ready for the beginning of Lent on Ash Wedneday. We are continuing with our 'Junior Chef' unit in English. The children are enjoying looking at recipes and their features: Title, Ingredients, Method, Serves with a grammar focus on nouns and verbs. They enjoyed making and sting pancakes today!
In Maths we are continuing to focus on numbers 100 to 200. We are also revising 2D shapes and introducing rhombuses.
Enjoy your week!

Week 2

Welcome to Week 2 of Year 2!  This week we are starting to get into the swing of things with our first full week.

Homework:
The children brought theirhomework folders home today. In them are their homework book (with the homeword grid glued in), this week's spelling word list and their reading log. Readers will come home for the first time on Tuesday. The 'Studyladder' login details have been glued to the inside cover of the homework book. You can find a link to it on the Homework page of the blog. The spelling words are also there in case the list gets misplaced. We have asked the children to keep the reading record, homework book, spelling list and reader in their homework folder so that all of their homework items remain together.  This will help them learn responsibility for their belongings. We ask that the homework folder gets returned to school daily so the children can get a new book.

It is important children read regularly at home to support the reading and literacy activities we do in the classroom.  Like with everything else, PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT! Even if your child is reading independently, please still listen to them read some pages aloud. It is important for them to still listen to you read aloud too so read a page or a paragraph of their book. Asking questions about what your child is reading will help them develop their comprehension skills as well.

In maths we are revising the 100s chart and beginning to explore 100 to 200.  You can help your child by doing lots of counting - forwards, backwards, in 2s, 5s and 10s.

In english we are beginning our literacy unit on recipes.

Have you heard about our class pets? Can you guess what they are? Stay tuned!

Have a good week,
Felicity & Melissa

Week 6

Hi and welcome to another week.  As we're sure you're aware, last week the children sat their maths test for this term.  This week they will be busy finishing off our Religion, English and Science units.

Swimming:
This Tuesday swimming lessons commence. We swim at 9.30 am so we need the children to come to school wearing their swimmers under their uniform and to also have sunscreen already applied.  They must have a swimming cap and they will need thongs to walk in.  They may also have sun shirts.  Please also remember to pack a towel and underwear!

Homework:
No more home readers will be sent home now.  The library need to collect them for sorting this week so we need any you still have at home back ASAP.  It is very important for the children to continue to read at home between now and the beginning of year 3.  Make use of the wonderful council libraries if they run out of books at home.

A REMINDER TOMORROW (MONDAY) IS FREE DRESS DAY.  GOLD COIN DONATION FOR THE MISSIONS.

Have a great week!

Week 4

Welcome to Week 4, this term is very quickly slipping by!  This week we are continuing our literature unit, focusing on Where's the Gold? and The Little Old Man who looked up at the Moon.   Once again, these are by Pamela Allen.  The children are really enjoying her books so if you are interested in getting some for home, keep an eye out at Australia Post shops as they often sell a pack of four of her books for a great price (about $10), especially in the lead up to Christmas.

In maths we are continuing with to work on addition, subtraction and multiplication as well as area.  This week we will also investigate chance by exploring possible outcomes of events and discussing the likelihood of events.

Have a great week!
