Term 1 Week 5

This week the class will be continuing our investigations on the mealworm. The children have really enjoyed watching and recording how these mealworms have grown. These are some of the best fed worms in the city as the children love to save some of their apple to feed to them.

In Literacy our phonic focus is on the endings of words using "ing" and "ed". The class will continue to dissect the narrative "Little Red Riding Hood". In Maths the class will be focusing on addition using doubles, near doubles and rainbow facts. This week we will now begin the Religion unit of "Creation story and being Stewards of Gods earth". We have all worked hard on our Vision Statement and we presented it today in the church with the year 4 classes.

Please remember we have commenced our Caritas appeal for the Lenten season and any loose change you can spare to give your child to give to our appeal would be appreciated. The Virtue that the children will be learning about for the next fortnight is Co Operation. It would be great if you have the opportunity to chat to your child about this virtue. Enjoy your week.

Kind regards

Term 1 Week 4

This week the class will be very busy finishing our Vision Statement. Please note the date and time of our Vision Statement presentation. It is on Monday the 24th at 9.30 in the church.

This week our phonic focus is on the long vowel sound of a, i, o and u, using a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e. The grammar focus this week is on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. We will be busy learning about the narrative of Little Red Riding Hood and discussing the structure of the story. In Maths the children will be looking at different counting patterns. The children will be learning about O’clock and half past on both analog and digital clocks. In science the students have been really enjoying the unit about the life cycle of the meal worm. We will be continuing our observations and watching them grow. Ask your child what a meal worm will turn into and what is the big word we use that describes the transformation.

Remember homework is given out on a Friday and expected to be handed in on the following Friday to be marked. Each week your child will have their spelling test on Friday morning. Please remember to read each night with your child.

Enjoy your week.

Term 1 Week 3

We have another busy week ahead as we continue to learn how our classroom looks and sounds as we work in small group rotations for Maths and Literacy.  We are continuing with our daily comprehension and guided reading groups.  In maths we are continuing to investigate numbers to 200 and count in 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's from any given staring number.

This week will also see us finish up our Daniel Morcombe Safety Unit and begin to investigate the life cycle of a mealworm in science.   The phonic focus this week is the long vowel sound a as in "ai" and "ay".  The children will be learning about commas in grammar and looking at the fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" as part of our Narrative genre.  We are continuing work on our classroom vision statement.  Please note the date for our presentation is Monday 24th Feb at 9.30am in the church.  Sacred singing commences this Monday with Mr Gambley in church at 2.30pm.

Enjoy your week.

Term 1 Week 2

Welcome to the first full week of this year! I hope all the children in our class have had a positive introduction to what year 2 is in my classroom.

This week will be the start of Music and PE lessons for the year. Our lessons are on Wednesday and Friday. These are the two days that the children need to wear their sports uniform. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday the children are required to wear their day uniform. Our class have Library on Thursday. A newsletter will be coming home this week to outline term one, so please look out for this important note.

This week in class we begin formal lessons. In Literacy this week we will be revising short vowel sounds, full stops and begin weekly comprehension tasks and guided reading. Home readers will be coming home this week. It is very important that your child reads their book every night and return it the next day to collect a new book. The home readers are meant to be easy for your child as we want this "home reading experience" to be positive and happy. Your child will be bringing home a reader that is a level or two below their PM benchmark. Homework will be sent home on Friday afternoon and is expected to be returned the following Friday. This allows for a weekend and 5 days for this task to be completed. I appreciate that you are all busy and having 5 days and a weekend to complete homework - I am hoping helps us all out. In Maths this week we will be looking at addition and numbers to 200. In health, we begin our safety lessons, using the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum. In science this week, we begin our investigations on the life cycle of a meal worm.

Enjoy the week ahead and please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any concerns or questions.

Kind regards
Felicity
